Silhouette
I was thinking about my love of silhouettes, and thought I’d make a post!
The framed toothbrush silhouette was made by my friend in College, and it’s my favorite piece of art in our home. It hangs in the bathroom, and it just makes me so happy.
Last summer I got a book called Mastering Silhouettes, and the images below are just a few that have elements to them that are so fascinating to me.
I love the idea of a silhouette casting a shadow, this one is painted on a pane of glass to give it the effect.
Inspiration in so many ways, I love his cutouts so much!
My grandfather’s paternal side of the family came from Denmark, and I remember how excited he was to show me and my brother Danny Kaye’s Hans Christian Andersen. Super romanticized and whimsical, but definitely planted a seed of curiosity for the real Hans Christian Andersen.
Another big fascination from childhood, specifically from the Disney animated film was the idea of Peter Pan’s shadow. The shadow as a solid/graphic/simplified representation of a thing, that it requires light to exist, and sometimes feels like it has a mind of its own. Shadow and silhouettes as a storytelling element in so many cultures too.
When I first started tinkering with animating clips in Procreate, I made a series of these animated silhouettes. They were so challenging, but got me to try new shortcuts and whatnot.
I still have a sweet spot for these lovers;)
